Reliable
communication network is the most fundamental of any enterprise.
Then the first and foremost thing is making an estimation of the
performance of the desired network.
In
this project, we describe the use of the OPNET (Optimized Network
Engineering Tools) simulation tool for modeling and analysis of
the different LAN (Local Area Network) technologies at Layer 2.
OPNET is a comprehensive simulation tool for performance
evaluation of communication network. The LAN technologies
include Ethernet, Coaxial Ethernet, Token ring, and FDDI (Fiber
Distributed Data Interface).
The
aim of the project is to study performance characteristics of
different LAN technologies at Layer 2 by gathering statistics
such as delay, throughput, and load and link utilization. The
results gathered from simulation are analyzed and compared with
each other. The conclusions are made in terms of projection of
the performance of each individual technology. So, it can help
us to choose the best technology for desired specification.
